What is Graston Technique?
The Graston Technique originates from a Chinese medicine called "Gua sha." Gua sha involves scrapping the muscle tissue to stimulate blood flow. Also known as "muscle scrapping." The therapy has been used for centuries.
A variation technique was introduced to the United States in the '90s. David Graston was an athlete. He had a knee injury that led him to develop the tool and the massage used today by most chiropractors.
The scrapping breaks down scar tissue to stimulates the blood flow. In other words, the scrapping softens the tissue to be able to manipulate it better. As a result, it increases blood flow and restores movement.
What is the Graston Technique Massage?
The Graston massage uses cross-friction massage. It involves brushing and rubbing against the scar tissue. This is where the Chiropractor creates a small trauma on the affected area that can cause temporary inflammation. In consequence, the body reacts by increasing the rate and amount of blood flow to the surrounded areas of the injury. As a result, it helps the healing process.
Additionally, the chiropractor may need to warm up your muscles prior to treatment. You may be asked to walk for 5 minutes, go on a treadmill, or get a hot treatment applied to the injured area for example. That's because warm tissues are easier to manipulate.

There are six main tools used. They are all made of stainless steel with curved and round edges. Therefore, the tools are not sharp. These are used to find and treat the fibrotic tissue. Also, each tool is created for a specific part of the body.
